What is a resin bound surface?
A resin bound system is a high-quality, durable surfacing solution created by mixing natural aggregates (stone) with a strong, UV-stable polyurethane resin. This mixture is then meticulously hand-trowelled onto a suitable base to create a smooth, seamless, and permeable finish. Unlike other methods, the stones are fully encapsulated in resin, providing a beautiful, long-lasting surface for driveways, patios, pathways, and pool surrounds.
What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded?
It is crucial to understand the distinction between these two systems, as they offer very different results, particularly regarding drainage and finish.
Resin Bound
The Resin Bound system is a high-end application where the aggregate (stones) and the resin are mixed together before they are applied to the surface.
Finish: This process creates a smooth, flat, and seamless surface with no loose stones.
Permeability: The key feature is that it is fully permeable (SuDS compliant), meaning water drains directly through the surface into the sub-base, preventing puddles.
Durability & Use: It is extremely durable and is the ideal choice for areas like driveways, patios, and pool surrounds where a professional, long-lasting finish is desired.
Resin Bonded
The Resin Bonded system is a simpler, less durable application where a layer of resin is first applied to the surface, and then loose aggregate is scattered on top of the wet resin.
Finish: This results in a much rougher, textured surface that is prone to having loose stones come away over time.
Permeability: Critically, this system is non-permeable, meaning water cannot pass through the surface. It will run off, potentially requiring separate drainage solutions.
Durability & Use: Because of the stone loss, it is less durable over the long term and is generally reserved for lighter, commercial anti-slip applications where the rough texture is the primary requirement.
Is a resin bound surface slippery?
Safety is a primary consideration in our installations. Resin bound surfaces are designed with a natural texture that provides excellent anti-slip properties, even in wet conditions. The permeability of the surface also prevents water from pooling, which significantly reduces the risk of ice forming in winter. For areas requiring enhanced grip, such as steep driveways or access ramps, we can include a crushed glass aggregate in the final layer to increase slip resistance further.
How long does a resin bound installation take?
The installation time depends on the size and complexity of the project, as well as the condition of the existing base. For a standard-sized driveway where the base is already suitable, our skilled team can often complete the installation within 1-2 days. If significant groundwork is required to create a new sub-base, the project may take longer. We provide a clear timeline for every project during our initial free consultation.
Can a resin bound surface be laid over my existing driveway?
In many cases, yes. A resin bound system can be installed over existing concrete or tarmac surfaces, provided they are structurally sound and free from major cracks or damage. Our team will conduct a thorough survey to assess the integrity of your current base. If it is not suitable, we will recommend the necessary groundwork to ensure a stable and durable foundation for your new surface. A solid base is essential for the longevity of your investment.
How long will my new resin bound surface last?
PRO Dorset Resin uses only the highest quality, UV-stable resins and premium aggregates, ensuring a surface that is built to last. Our installations are resistant to cracking, fading, and weed growth. With proper care, you can expect your resin bound surface to maintain its stunning appearance for over 15-20 years. We stand behind our craftsmanship with a comprehensive guarantee, giving you complete peace of mind.
Is a resin bound driveway strong enough for vehicles?
Absolutely. Our resin bound systems create an incredibly strong and durable surface that is more than capable of handling daily use from all types of domestic vehicles, including cars, vans, and SUVs. The seamless finish distributes weight evenly, preventing the cracks and shifting that can occur with traditional block paving.
What colour and design options are available?
This is where your creativity can shine. We offer a vast range of natural aggregate colours, from contemporary greys and silvers to classic golden browns and deep reds. These can be used to create a single uniform colour or combined to design bespoke blends that are unique to your property. Our team can also create custom patterns, borders, and even integrate your house number or a company logo for commercial projects. Our Full Colour Range.
Can you match the colour to my property’s exterior?
Yes. During our consultation, we can provide samples and help you select a colour or blend that perfectly complements your home’s brickwork, rendering, and surrounding landscape. Our goal is to create a harmonious and elegant transition from your home to your outdoor space.
How do I maintain my resin bound surface?
- Regular Sweeping: Use a stiff broom to remove leaves, dirt, and other debris.
- Occasional Washing: A simple jet wash or hosing down once or twice a year will remove any ingrained dirt and restore the vibrant colours of the aggregate.
- Weed Prevention: While the surface is weed-resistant, airborne seeds can occasionally take root. These are easily removed and can be prevented with a standard weed killer application in the spring.
